Did you know that you have to choose your shampoos wisely especially if you are losing hair or have seborrheic dermatitis? How do you guys decide which shampoos to buy? Type 1: Those obsessed with ‘No’s
No Parabens, No Silicones, etc This one has 7 of these ingredients not included in it? It must be a really healthy shampoo then! I’ve gotta buy this! Type 2: Those obsessed with ‘special effects’
My scalp heats up too much So I’ve gotta buy these ‘Cool Shampoos’ to keep my scalp cool! Type 3: Those obsessed with weak-acid shampoos
Everyone says that weak-acid shampoos are good and this one’s written weak-acid on it So I will buy this one then! Type 4: Those obsessed with mixed effects
Oh, an exfoliation shampoo? So it means I can exfoliate and shampoo my head at the same time? My head was starting to itch lately This one should fix the problem! Come on guys, Look here, please! You might say it’s just a shampoo, but we use it every day and some shampoos have really terrifying ingredients included in them Toothpaste, shampoos, body cleansers, cosmetics, and even plastic bottles like this All of these build up inside your body So it’d be more surprising if you stay healthy One of my viewers told me that he has severe seborrheic dermatitis and is losing her hair and asked me how she should treat his scalp So I asked her the most basic stuff: “What shampoo do you use?” And she told me that he uses ‘Pxxxx’ Shampoo that has 7 different ingredients not included in it like paraben or silicone She was so happy with his decision I cant’t analyse every single ingredient for her So I just told her to keep her eyes on the ingredients She knew what she was doing to some extent so she used ‘Hwahae’ app to search up the ingredients and told me: “I’ve analysed the ingredients and it’s a weak-acid shampoo I was worried at first but the ingredients aren’t as bad as I thought” Like this happy viewer a lot of you guys buy products after watching an ad, right? So, I checked the ingredients myself just in case I looked the shampoo up, and it looked familiar It was advertised quite wildly a few months ago The ad was so funny So I was thinking of copying that ad to gain some attention I forgot about it, but that was the shampoo the viewer told me I looked at the ingredients, and it didn’t have these 7 ingredients in it paraben, silicone, artificial colouring, mineral or animal derived ingredients Triethanolamine, … How do I say this Imidazolidinyl urea The ad highlighted this as well Thank you so much for excluding those ingredients Now, let’s take a look at other ingredients The ‘Pxxxx’ shampoo has 29 different ingredients in it And based on EWG grade, 17 of those were grade 1, 3 of those were grade 2, 3 of those were grade 3, 1 of those was grade 4, 1 of those was grade 8, and 4 other ingredients did not have a grade Now, excluding grade 1 and 2 ingredients let’s take a look at grade 3 ingredients By the way, don’t miss the main point of this video out: How to read shampoo ingredients and an app to check a shampoo’s ingredient I’ll go through the ‘Pxxxx’ shampoo first and explain these later in the video Don’t miss out! The first grade 3 ingredient:
Sodium Laureth Sulfate – surfactant You can see that it’s second in the list for ‘Pxxxx’ shampoo Second in the list means that there’s quite a lot of it inside the shampoo this ingredient is used in toothpaste, cosmetics and etc, and not only in shampoos You think they won’t put any harmful ingredients in a product? That’s what my mum always say Let’s say that the manufacturers didn’t know in the 80s or 90s But nowadays, there are ingredients that can replace this ingredient But, with them still not replacing the ingredients, I think they know it’s not healthy, but don’t care about it Even Hwahae app has a list of caution for Sodium Laureth Sulfate It’s written: It can easily enter the body through the skin and stays in the heart, liver, lung or the brain for about 5 days and disperse carcinogenic chemicals throughout the body through blood It can cause the skin to dry, and are known to cause cataracts Especially, it can damage children’s eyes so caution needs to be taken So from now on, I will not get any products with Sodium Laureth Sulfate in it The second grade 3 ingredient:
Sodium Benzoate It’s the ninth ingredient in the ingredient list for ‘Pxxxx’ shampoo, out of 29 ingredients Sodium Benzoate is used to replace paraben which can cause harm It’s used a lot as a preservative Even though it’s relatively stable There’s a research study saying that if it meets a large quantity of Vitamin C it can create benzene, which is carcinogenic This ingredient is used quite commonly as well but unlike Sodium Laureth Sulfate, I can’t say that I won’t get any products with this in it But I still mentioned this ingredient because I wanted to talk about the standard percentages of shampoo’s ingredients In Hwahae app, the maximum concentration of sodium benzoate was 0.05% As far as I know, any ingredients that compose less than 1% of the product can be included in the product’s ingredient list, in any order And Sodium Benzoate which has a set amount of concentration limit is listed as ninth ingredient of ‘Pxxxxx’ shampoo That means that any ingredients near sodium benzoate in the list compose less than 1% of the product The third grade 3 ingredient:
Citrus Aurantifolia Citrus Aurantifolia is graded 3 in EWG but it doesn’t say why it’s graded 3 Please let me know if anyone of you guys know why Now for grade 4 ingredient:
Phenoxyethanol Phenoxyethanol is a preservative and has a concentration limit of 1% It’s used to replace paraben as a preservative with researches showing the danger of paraben However, apparently it can cause allergies by irritating the skin also it is known to have an anesthetic effect if a body absorbs it This one is also very common A grade 8 ingredient:
Fragrances It was identified as one of six neurotoxic chemicals that need further investigation by the US National Academy of Sciences in 1986 Fragrances are found in a lot of products Any chemicals that create smells are called fragrances It’s really vague and can cause headache, dizziness, rashes, pigmentation, and irritate the respiratory system and etc I don’t think colours and fragrances are necessary for any products now So from now on, I will try to recommend products without any fragrances as much as possible Also, ethanol is a grade 2 ingredient in EWG To be honest ethanol can be found in a number of products so I didn’t really care too much about it but But be cautious with ethanol too It’s so confusing even for me so normal consumers like my happy viewer will have no clue no matter how much they research about it It’s difficult So I’ll tell you how to choose a shampoo and and an app that’ll help you to look up ingredients in a shampoo First of all, here are two things you should keep in mind when looking at ingredients Firstly, check the order of the ingredients in the list They are in descending order with the most common one on the top But ingredients that consist less than 1% of the product can be listed in any order Secondly, we can’t find out exactly how much of the ingredients are included in the product So let me tell you about typical shampoo formulation When shampoos are made, about 80 – 90% of it is water and a cleanser/surfactant and other 10% are made out of fragrances, extracts, preservatives and etc So the ads talking about all the extracts that they’ve put into the product the percentage of those extracts are from that 10%, minus fragrance and preservatives Ads highlight all the good things about different extracts but you can’t expect much when it makes up about 1% of the product So guys, when you are choosing a shampoo Don’t focus on extra ingredients that have some amazing effects Focus on these 3 important things first Firstly, find a shampoo that suits your scalp’s type Weak-acid shampoos don’t mean that it works for everyone If you have an oily scalp, get a shampoo with high a strong cleaning power and if you have a dry scalp, use a weak-acid shampoo if your scalp is mixed (dry+oily), use the strong one and weak-acid one alternately Secondly, roughly check how much for the ingredients are included in the product For a rough guess, Fragrances can only make up less than 1% of the product and 0.4 – 0.8% for preservatives like paraben So any ingredients near fragrances/preservatives in the list would make up around 1% of the product If you look at a shampoo’s ingredients 80 – 90% of it is water and a surfactant So check if the surfactant is natural, or if it’s formed chemically Thirdly, install Hwahae app Refer to product comparisons in Hwahae app It’s not 100% perfect but it’s useful for lazy people like myself 1. Install Hwahae app 2. Search by product name, or brand name 3. Open ingredients list 4. Check their EWG grades If it consists of ingredients with a grade of 1 or 2 only, and suits your scalp’s type you should get it then I say this over and over again It doesn’t mean the ingredient is harmless just because it’s graded low (1 – 2) But we can’t sit there all day analysing those long and complicated ingredient lists Even for me, whenever I look at a list like this I don’t even want to read it Also, the ingredients are spelt all different Korean because it’s based on English So quite often you won’t get any results when you google it You just have to make a lucky guess to find a result So stop buying shampoos blindly At least refer to Hwahae app’s EWG grade list That’ll help you a lot It’d be nice if I could analyse all the products one by one But I’m still a beginner in analysing ingredients So it takes too much time for me to analyse all the ingredients in a product and who knows when a product that meets your need will come out So until I become an expert in analysing ingredient You guys should give it a go at searching it yourself with the methods I told you Got it?
