CDL Driver Training and United States Truck Driver Drug Testing

Hi there, Rick with Smart Drive Test talking to you today about drug testing. In the late 1990s, I worked as a safety and compliance
officer for a small flat deck company in Ottawa. Ontario. We had one of our drivers
pulled on a random drug test. He was drug and alcohol tested according to the
rules of drug testing in the United States of America. All of our drivers ran
into the States and were subject to American rules which states that drivers
must be drug and alcohol tested in entered into a pool and randomly drawn.
He blew considerably over the legal limit for alcohol at ten o’clock in the
morning. Subsequently we had to put him through
rehabilitation training and there were some very hostile feelings about him
being pulled on a random as part and parcel of the job. Eventually, because of
those hostile feelings and he felt that he had been tricked on a random, he
eventually resigned, and a relationship deteriorated between us and him and he
left feeling somewhat betrayed. Unfortunately, for many drivers you are
subject to random drug testing according to American rules if you’re running into
the States or you are an American driver. We’re gonna talk to you about drug testing
today as part and parcel of the job as being a truck driver. We’ll be right back with that. [OPENING CREDITS & MUSIC] Hi there, Rick, welcome back talking today about drug
testing for truck drivers—Canadian truck drivers—running into the States and
American drivers – you are subject to drug and alcohol testing. Before you begin
working as a truck driver in the United States of America. If you’re running into
the State you’re going to have to be pre-employment drug tested. The company
pays for the drug testing. They send you down to a facility that will drug test
you. You need to empty everything out of your pockets, sign some legal documents,
and whatnot indicating that it is in fact you. They send you into a
bathroom, you pee in a bottle. The taps on the sink are taped shut, the
toilet lid is taped shut, and the top of the cover taped shut. You gotta seal the
bottle and give it to them and they do drug testing. The drugs that they’re
testing for are: marijuana; cocaine; opium which is opiates rather which is
opium and codeine derivatives; methamphetamines and amphetimines and PCP.
Those are the drugs that you’re going to be tested for. You’re also gonna go into a
pool and be randomly tested for alcohol. Now the way that it works is there
are companies that this part of the job is outsourced to. The reason that is done
is because for smaller companies that have five or six drivers you don’t want
to have half of your drivers every year being drug tested in twenty-five percent
of them being alcohol tested. So what they do is there’s companies who take all of
the truck driving companies all of their drivers put into a very large pool and
the smaller companies is a very small chance that their drivers are going to be
pulled on a random according to the rules for the United States of America.
So know that you’re gonna be pre-employment drug tested. You could
potentially be pulled for a random drug test at any time according to the rules
of the pool which state that 50% of the pool must be tested annually for drugs. 25% of the pool must be tested annually
for alcohol. If you’re pulled on a random you can be sent for a drug or alcohol
test anytime that you were reporting to safety sensitive duties, anytime
that you are coming back from safety sensitive duties or any time that you
are at work. So know that any one of those
times you can be pulled on a random if you’re a driver running into the States
or an American driver. The other time that you will be drug tested is if you
were involved in a crash and the criteria for being involved in a crash is if
there are fatalities, there are injuries that require hospitalization, or any one
of the vehicles needs to be towed you as a driver will be drug tested in the
United States of America. So that gives you some overview of the criteria for
being drug tested as a Canadian driver running into the States or as an
American driver. In conclusion, Canadian drivers running
into the United States will be subject to drug testing and all American drivers,
commercial drivers, are subject to drug testing. You’re pre-employment drug tested. You are tested for marijuana, cocaine, opiates, methamphetamines, and anphetimines and
PCP. You will be entered into a pool where 50% of that pool annually will be
tested for drugs, 25% will be tested for alcohol. You can
also be randomly pulled and tested any time that you were reporting to safety
sensitive duties or coming back from safety sensitive duties or at safety
sensitive duties. The other time that you will be tested is post-crash. If any one
of the vehicles are towed, there are fatalities, or injuries requiring
hospitalization at a crash. So know that as a Canadian driver running in the States,
you’re gonna be drug tested; an American driver, you’re also going to be drug
tested. I’m Rick with Smart Drive Test. Thanks for watching. If you like the channel subscribe below

  1. I'm also getting a hair test. Do most companies do 5 panel hair? I'm prescribed klonopin for occasional anxiety.

  2. Hi Rick, I'm really considering getting into Trucking. Here is my honest question. 2yrs and 7months ago I was in a wreck as a passenger with my husband and I was hurt pretty bad so anyway I couldn't walk and had to be rehabilitated. I been walking now without help for about 2months now and without pain meds (oxycodone) to be exact. So I'm 2 months off everything. Off crutches off pain meds and it's time to get my life back on track so I was thinking Trucking. I went to my Dr and was released for all clear a month ago. My doctor says my system is clean but that's not a hair test so my urine is clean but I'm worried and don't wanna mess up my chance bcse I was on them for over 2yrs. What do you think? I was never addicted but I was indeed on them. If it's just a pee test I'm all good but looking online I see hair test. Just want your opinion.

  3. Hi Rick, I have a burning question that I would be extremely thankful for if you were able to answer. I'm interested in doing Canadian domestic trucking only. What is the likelihood that the company would administer random drug tests (even if they offered domestic and cross-border services), excluding a pre-employment test? Thanks in advance!

  4. question if u have a class A permit and u pass your dot physical and u fail a school hair particle test will this go on your dat report

  5. I failed a pre employment DS with a flatbed company I was 3 NG over the max 15 NG for a negative. Real talk I smoked 3 weeks prior and I got caught only trace amount but got caught. The doctor said at this trace amount I should request a retest the trainer/safety director said no sent me home and reported to DAC. My question is will he be obligated to report to DOT and will I be getting a letter from DOT for disqualification of my CDL til I complete the SAP Return to duty steps. The reason I ask is another company that does not use DAC (Tri axle dump truck company)  wants to offer me a job they only pull MVR. but is DOT regulated

  6. Also I read somewhere that the employer is required to provide a packet explaining the SAP requirements even if they won't hire you back, they never did this so I am thinking they did their due diligence by reporting to DAC but not DOT. I was not in a CMV at all on a public road on their lot for pre trip.

  7. Hello Sir. Good video. I've been prescribed Klonopin since 2000. I'm in school now for my class A. I applied and I got a call back saying they could not offer me employment. I asked if he could say why and he gave me a scripted rebuttal "that's above my pay grade." I also have a background but have heard there are companies that have hired worse backgrounds than mine. Lastly, I don't have a full 10 year history of recent employment. I had 2 or 3 years where I was not employed but i was honest about it and simply said I lived with family during the recession and did not work these years. Knight got me all the way to AZ and on the last day of orientation proceeded to tell me "you have been disqualified by safety because you did not disclose your full background." When not only did I but they ran at least 1 full background report on me before I even almost left for Phoenix. My question is I can't seem to find out WHY or WHAT is causing these companies from not offering me employment. I simply am trying to work and mainly to find out is this something I can repair or alter and GET trucking employment or is this something that is just xx 86 and I don't stand a chance so don't bother trying any longer. I know the trucking companies have some sort of data base at least I believe they must almost as if they can pull your name and see OK abc nbc and cbs trucking have all turned this guy down, let's check the notes here as to why…..ahhh here it is……Only I'm blind cuz I can't see or be told what the "here it is" is. Thanks
