Hello, I’m Dr. Neal Schultz [pause] and welcome to DermTV. Patients often complain that moisturizers
just don’t help the dry skin next to their nose, what’s going on? It is correct
that dry skin usually appears to have flakes or scales and unfortunately
most people assume anytime they see flaking on their skin that they have dry
skin. The reality is that flaking skin is a common result of many different
forms of inflammation in the skin and dryness is just one of them. So when people see flaking next to the nose,
or in the eyebrows, or up at the hairline actually that is not dry skin
that usually is a form of dandruff. What we call “Seborrheic Dermatitis”
and it is a very characteristic location for having seborrheic
or dandruff. To treat this instead of using a moisturizer there are many
different over-the-counter shampoos that either have as an active ingredient
salicylic acid, tar, zinc or selenium that should be used to shampoo
your scalp and also bring some of that shampoo on to your other affected
areas of your face daily. If that does not work to help the flaking than see
your dermatologist who will undoubtedly give you some topical treatment
creams for the treatment of your facial dandruff not dry skin.

  1. What causes this type of dandruff? I do have flaky skin in my eyebrows and along my hairline, and it gets pretty bad at times. I often use Selsun Blue shampoo for oily hair and it has helped my dandruff in my hair, but I was wondering if there are any other factors that cause this dandruff "dry skin" outbreak?

  2. Dr.Schultz. Thank you for this post. I have tried and tried and tried many shampoo's, soaps, creams and I am glad to let you all know that Head and Shoulders (Clean and Balanced) really works. Don't try any other Head and Shoulders type. Its ONLY the Clean and Balanced. Period!

  3. Would you recommend using an over the counter shampoo with coal tar, such as the Neutrogena T-Gel, on your face for facial Seborrheic Dermatitis? Everywhere but my forehead seems to have it. There is a clear distinction of where the fungus has spread because it doesn't tan and you can see the lighter spots stopping right before it reaches an unaffected area. I also have redness and flaking on my nose.A dermatologist prescribed me the 2.5% hydracortisone cream, but it didn't help.
