Start by placing four stones in each small cup. You have 48 stones total, and 12 cups, which means there should be four stones in each cup. Each player starts off with a total of 24 stones or beads.
Your mancala is the big basin to your right. Also called a "store," it is where captured pieces are placed. Choose which player is going to go first.
Because there's not really an advantage to going first, flip a coin or choose a person at random. Going counter-clockwise, the beginning player takes all four stones in one cup on their side and places one stone each in any four adjacent cups.
Players can put stones in their own Mancala, but not in their opponent's Mancala. If you have enough stones to reach your opponent's Mancala, skip it.
If your last stone falls into your Mancala, take another turn. If the last stone you drop is in an empty cup on your side, capture that piece along with any pieces in the hole directly opposite.
Captured pieces go into your Mancala store. When one player's six cups are completely empty, the game ends.

Airline Clients. Photo: M. The object of the game is to capture more seeds than one's opponent. Mark Rawlings has written a computer program to extensively analyze both the "standard" version of Kalah and the "empty capture" version, which is the primary variant.
The analysis was made possible by the creation of the largest endgame databases ever made for Kalah. They include the perfect play result of all 38,,, positions with 34 or fewer seeds.
In , for the first time ever, each of the initial moves for the standard version of Kalah 6,4 and Kalah 6,5 have been quantified: Kalah 6,4 is a proven win by 8 for the first player and Kalah 6,5 is a proven win by 10 for the first player.
In addition, Kalah 6,6 with the standard rules has been proven to be at least a win by 4. Further analysis of Kalah 6,6 with the standard rules is ongoing.
For the "empty capture" version, Geoffrey Irving and Jeroen Donkers proved that Kalah 6,4 is a win by 10 for the first player with perfect play, and Kalah 6,5 is a win by 12 for the first player with perfect play.
Anders Carstensen proved that Kalah 6,6 was a win for the first player. Mark Rawlings has extended these "empty capture" results by fully quantifying the initial moves for Kalah 6,4 , Kalah 6,5 , and Kalah 6,6.
With searches totaling days and over 55 trillion nodes, he has proven that Kalah 6,6 is a win by 2 for the first player with perfect play.
This was a surprising result, given that the "4-seed" and "5-seed" variations are wins by 10 and 12, respectively. We serve a variety of Japanese favorites including our famous teriyaki chicken bowls, yaki soba noodle dishes and grilled egg rolls.

Played by the mancala rules too. Makes sense that it would have many variations. I never heard of this game.
Will try to play it when I can. Beautiful 'ible, I really like your photos. Decades ago i would play Mancala, which is reported to be the oldest board game, originating in Africa.
Never heard of Kahala. But what is amazing to me about seeing this great job you did, is that i haven't played Mancala in so long i forgot how, but needed to come up with a game for a gift for my brother and his wife an old tradition, but i really needed to MAKE something instead of buy it this time.
For 30 years yes 30 i wanted to make a Mancala out of seashells. I have never seen anyone do a home version, so it felt good doing something original and DIY.
Now i see this immediately after. Of course, NOW i have to follow up with a Kahala made the same way. I'll give it to my other brother.
You did great, artisan after my own heart :. Thank you for the kind words! Great job! Love everything about this, the repurposed material to the use of a new tool.
